If you receive the error “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” there are several things you can try to resolve the issue. We first need to decide if the problem is related to your network connectivity, the website, or a problem with your browser. This is why we often recommend users have at least two web browsers on their computer. If you use Internet Explorer and something happens to it, you may not ever be able to get online without reinstalling Windows or doing a system restore. You should also have a secondary user account on the machine just in case, as this gives you the added benefit of having different settings and rights, would could contribute to someone losing their access due to malicious code or accidentally deleting a file they should not have. You also need to make sure the problem is not specific to that website. It’s possible the site simply might be temporarily down.
Suggestions to Fix Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage Error
Reboot the computer – It’s a little known fact that 99 percent of all strange computer errors can be fixed simply be rebooting the computer. If that doesn’t work, shut the PC completely down for a while then power up to see if the problem still exists. We won’t go into why this works, but it might, so give it a try.
Power Cycle the Network – Shut down the computer, unplug the router and unplug the modem. Power them back on in the reverse order. This will help clear up any IP and DNS problems you might be experiencing.
Check your IP address- Go to Start > Run and type cmd and hit OK. At the prompt, type ipconfig /all and make sure you are getting an IP address local to your network, such as 192.168.x.x and NOT 169.254.x.x. The latter IP address beginning in 169 is a made up IP address Windows uses when it cannot get one from the DHCP server, which is usually your router or Internet Service Provider.
Try A Different Web Browser- If you have a second web browser, such as Firefox, give that a try. If you can connect with the other browser, try resetting your Internet Explorer by opening the browser and going to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab>Restore.
You can also try deleting your temp files and refreshing the browser window by hitting the F5 key. But this type of problem is often network related and can be fixed by confirming all connections and IP addresses are correct. RAY- Thank you so much after 3 days trying to fix my internet connection I follow your advise and it worked thanks again
every time i faced the problem when internet explorer opens it shows ïnternet explorer cannot display the webpage”
download firefox, i just did it and it works !
thanks
I’ve done everything above and it still won’t fix the problem my pages cannot be displayed
I tried everything noted on several forums, but still cannot get IE 7 to connect. Firefox v3.6.3 connects just fine, so it’s not a network connectivity problem. I would just forget Internet Explorer and work with Firefox, but many applications and websites “assume” that I have Internet Explorer in my PC, and will not function. Note: This all happened after I had a malware application invade me (truth: I downloaded and executed an executable file by accident). After I got rid of the bug (with nags to tell me I was infected, and FORTRESS SOFTWARE would sell me an antivirus program), but, IE stopped working. It got worse when I tried to uninstall IE 7 and reinstall it. The IE application is once again present in my PC, but (like a lot of Microsoft crap) it doesn’t work!!!
Open IE, then Tools, Internet Options and then under the Advanced tab scroll down to the bottom and select the repair option for IE 7. See if that works.
I had a viscious attack today as well and now the IE says it “cannot display the webpage”. I don’t see the “repair option” that you mentioned under the Advanced tab. I had three porn shortcuts on my desktop after this attack and their path was attached to iexplorer.exe”porn.com” (just like that) which I tried to locate in my files but couldn’t find (hoping to delete it once and for all). WHAT a mess. Please help. Firefox works fine.
How can you get your media software to bypass Ie and go to Firefox? Like my itunes and real player don’t work properly now
because it tries to connect to ie!
If you’re having an associations issue, try shift+right-clicking the file and choose “open with” and select the correct program or browser. Notice there is a box you can check to make it always open with the program you choose.
Download the patch IE7-WindowsXP-KB980182-x86-ENU.exe from Microsofts website. This will resolve the issue with IE7. If you are using a different version of IE, search for KB980182 and grab the patch for your specific version.
It had gotten so bad I wasn’t even surfing the net. After opening 3 or 4 pages, I got the error message and and could surf no further without re-starting. Then, the same thing happened. What fixed the problem was deleting temporary files, deleting browsing history, and deleting forms. It worked like a charm. Hope this helps.
Simply AWESOME, easy to follow directions and got me back online.. thank you
i get the Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage Error when i login my email or facebook
Make sure you’re going to facebook.com and not using a link in your bookmarks. Maybe the link has changed. Also, update your browser or even download a second browser such as Firefox or Chrome and test it.
Ummm i read the whole thing and tried everything but when i try to sign in to youtube or google it says Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. when i use google chrome it says SSL error. I don’t know what to do. please help
If you haven’t already tried, type in the address manually, as maybe your bookmarked link is bad. If this is not the case, see if you can get on through another computer in the house. I just want to make sure the sites are not being blocked on the DNS level of the router.
Whenever I am on youtube an try to look at certain videos or even on images, the internet explorer cannot display the page and closes the page down. why is it doin this? Only happens on certain things I go on. Help!!!
I have tried all of the suggestions and steps on Microsoft support. I tried to do a chat with them but because I have OEM in the id number, I was told to call Dell who promises to fix it for a fee. Mozilla Firefox works just fine. I now know why my daughter is a Mac fan.
You might want to join our free forums, as that is the best place to do extended help. But you might want to open IE, click Tools, then Internet Options. Click the Connections tab, then run through the Lan Setup wizard. Select what type of connection your have–it’s pretty straight forward.
Also, if you’re still running IE6, try upgrading to IE8.
When will computers work like the cold water? When is the last time your cold water did not work? Ask Bill Gates? Or who do you blame? Would you buy a new car if if had the same reliability of computers and the internet? NOT! I’m looking for Bill Gates…I blame him.
I am having similar issues with IE8 not displaying any webpages. I tried Google Chrome and Mozilla, same thing “Page Can not be displayed”. The funny thing is I can still get Windows Updates and Adobe Reader updates with no problems and blazing speed. This leaves me baffled. I have tried resetting winsock and the TCP/IP. I have done nearly all the suggestions I could find on the internet. I am using a wireless adapter. This is a desktop PC running Vista 32 bit. I have a laptop right next to the desktop that works fine running Vista and IE8 using the same wireless adapter (I unplug it from whichever computer I am not using and plug it into the USB of the one I want). I had another desktop PC running XP Home Edition and the same wireless adapter and it worked great. I have not tried doing a System Restore yet. I may need to revert to that. IE worked on this PC before, but using a hard line connection and at a different house. Anyone have any other suggestions or thing I could try?
