Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

July 9, 2009

in Windows

If you receive the error “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” there are several things you can try to resolve the issue. We first need to decide if the problem is related to your network connectivity, the website, or a problem with your browser. This is why we often recommend users have at least two web browsers on their computer. If you use Internet Explorer and something happens to it, you may not ever be able to get online without reinstalling Windows or doing a system restore. You should also have a secondary user account on the machine just in case, as this gives you the added benefit of having different settings and rights, would could contribute to someone losing their access due to malicious code or accidentally deleting a file they should not have. You also need to make sure the problem is not specific to that website. It’s possible the site simply might be temporarily down.

Suggestions to Fix Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage Error

Reboot the computer – It’s a little known fact that 99 percent of all strange computer errors can be fixed simply be rebooting the computer. If that doesn’t work, shut the PC completely down for a while then power up to see if the problem still exists. We won’t go into why this works, but it might, so give it a try.

Power Cycle the Network – Shut down the computer, unplug the router and unplug the modem. Power them back on in the reverse order. This will help clear up any IP and DNS problems you might be experiencing.

Check your IP address- Go to Start > Run and type cmd and hit OK. At the prompt, type ipconfig /all and make sure you are getting an IP address local to your network, such as 192.168.x.x and NOT 169.254.x.x. The latter IP address beginning in 169 is a made up IP address Windows uses when it cannot get one from the DHCP server, which is usually your router or Internet Service Provider.

Try A Different Web Browser- If you have a second web browser, such as Firefox, give that a try. If you can connect with the other browser, try resetting your Internet Explorer by opening the browser and going to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab>Restore.

You can also try deleting your temp files and refreshing the browser window by hitting the F5 key. But this type of problem is often network related and can be fixed by confirming all connections and IP addresses are correct. If you can access other sites, then you may have a virus. One of the things a smart virus will do is block access to these sites through your “hosts” file. Boot to Safe Mode With Networking by rebooting and tapping the F8 key. Once there, download and run Malwarebytes from Malwarebytes.org.

I have a problem whenever i try to login hotmail either its comes up with a remark saying Internet explorer cannot display the page or if i am able to see my inbox i will not be able to open it say Windows cannot connect now try later,,,its stupid sometimes…aal my people knows about my this email address ,,,i think i have to change my email account now either to yahoo or gmail…

There’s also a chance the problem isn’t on your computer at all. I often can’t get to Hotmail from any of my browsers on my Windows XP PC or from my Linux system. I can get just about anywhere else, including the Windows Live home page. Since the Microsoft sites usually don’t respond to “ping” requests that isn’t a very good test either.

In other words, if everything works but Hotmail the reason may very well be that Hotmail isn’t working.

The past few days I have no luck in displaying the “Swagbucks” webpage. I have tried all the normal steps, resetting advanced internet settings, clearing temp/cache files, defrag, yada yada. I have tried getting the webpage with firefox, no luck. So far this is the only page it will not display, any suggestions????

Unless someone blocked it in the “hosts” file or in the router, the site might simply be down.

Thanks for the speedy reply. It’s not, I’ve checked with others. It’s just simply that something on my computer won’t let me access the page, but I’m not sure what it is!

OK, I am having the same problem but with Facebook. It started happening about a week and a half ago…worked perfectly fine prior to this. I CAN access it sometimes by hitting refresh a dozen times. as for the “hosts” and smart virus response above, I just installed a spyware program today actually PC Tool Spyware Doctor..so I should not need to download and run Malaware right? Should I go to safe mode and run my spy doctor? I also have Comcast and McAfee antivirus. I have deleted temp files etc…and the IP address checks out fine. have rebooted and cycled down as well. Using Vista with IE 7 – tried IE 8 some time ago but was a mess with my Comcast. Any help appreciated! Also where is the “hosts” file to see if the site is blocked?

If you can access web pages fine with an ethernet cable plug in but cannot using wi-fi, make sure your TCP/IP settings under Wireless Network Connection are set to “Obtain IP address automatically”. If no luck next re-enter your routers’ WPA2-PSK password or whichever security you are using into your Wireless Network Connection Settings. For example, for an SMC router, type “http://192.168.0.1″ (Linksys is 192.168.1.1) Next enter password to login to your router, next find a “wireless” tab or similar, next find “encryption” or similar—copy the password, next find the status bar icon on your system tray, double click, find the name of your wireless network, double click and paste that password you copied into the Network key box. Hope this helps!!!

Sound like my issue on my wifes computer;
We have two other computers working fine, running off the same WiFi router.
On the problem machine I can down load and send emials via Outlook.
I can go to any of her favorites just fine, running Internet Explorer.
But, it can not go to Google.com without getting ‘Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage’?
I can call up Yahoo.com, but when I try to search anything I also get ”Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage’?

Any new suggestions?

I am gald someone else is having same problem and that i am not the only one, but am upset that we all have not found a fix….if there is one.

You can uninstall IE8 or use another browser like Firefox.

Hello:

I have reinstalled my Windows XP and am using IDEA’s pendrive for internet access. I am able to browse using Google but fail to access Microsoft and related sites. I cannot even download AVG which I used regularly until my system crashed due to intermittant power outages. Please help.

Sounds like you have some type of spyware or virus despite having reformatted. Do you have additional drives in that PC that could be infected? If so, remove them until you run the updates. Also, infection could be coming from another computer on your network. Consider removing them from the network until you run your updates. lastly, you might want to go to the microsoft site and download SP3 for XP and burn it to disk. You can then install it on the PC without having to download it.

Try opening IE, then go to Tools, Internet Options and then select the Connections tab. Make sure Never Dial a Connection is ticked. Also, check the LAN settings at the bottom of that window. Walk through the Wizard and it should set IE up per your connection–cable, DSL or Fios. If you have more problems, join our forums.

I also have the internet explorer cannot display web page.. i tried to join your forum ..but there again i cannot access my yahoo account to get the log in info..i can browse any site except the yahoo’s and facebook…tried to get foxfire, but receive the same page…Help

What kind of connection do you have–Cable? Have you scanned for viruses? Other browsers are Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera. Try others if you cannot get to Firefox. Seems like you are only having issues with sites that make you login. Do you have admin rights to the computer? Is the couputer going through a router–maybe bypass that.
