On the scale of cool, the needle on the Verizon MiFi is right between Awesome and Wicked. The MiFi is a credit-card-sized Wireless Access Point you can slip in your pocket. It provides wireless access for up to five nearby devices–so anywhere you go, you take your own personal wireless network with you at 3G speeds. The only problem with this device is the price and the rates. While this is great new technology, it currently costs $99 with a 2 year contract. On top of that it is a whopping $59.99 per month with a 5 GB limit. It’s not a lot of money if you plan on always using it with two or more devices, but if you do always use multiple devices, you’ll use up that 5 GB limit in a hurry.
We’re mentioning this device because it appears this will be the future of how we network on the go. This could transition into having this technology built directly into your cell phone, your car or even your portable computer. Having a laptop that not only connects but shares its connection isn’t that big of a stretch, but having a cell phone that allows others near you to connect to the Internet certainly is something to hope for. Hopefully, as this technology developes, other providers will innovate and lower the price while raising the bandwidth.
