in Sony

Restoring your Sony VAIO to it’s original factory condition is sometimes preferred and necessary when troubleshooting and repairing your Sony product. The steps below quickly describe this process.

How to Create Sony Vaio Recovery Disks

Most Sony Vaio systems will have a VAIO recovery wizard. Create a Recovery Media Kit using this wizard and you’ll be able to create a set of CDs that will enable you to do a system recovery on your Sony VAIO machine.

If your PC does not have this feature, you can always call Sony at 1-800-488-SONY to have them send you the disks.

Sony VAIO System Restore

Once you have either created or ordered and received the CDs necessary to restore your Sony VAIO computer, you’ll need to place the first CD in the drive and reboot the machine. The recovery process will immediately begin when the system boots. If it does not begin, you may have to enter the BIOS of the computer to change the boot sequence to the CD ROM instead of the hard drive. To enter the BIOS, tap the F2 key numerous times when booting.

If I recreate VAIO recovery disks after I install personal software. Will this software be installed after a recovery?

No, the recovery disks are created from a partition on the drive that stores the factory image. You can use thir-party software like Acronis to image your disk and it WILL retain all info.

dave, i have made recovery disc out of vaio inbuilt wizard. is it that when i use my recovery disc in case of complete wipe-out, it will install the complete OS in C along with a separate recovery partition too? (or only C)
Also what is the difference between making recovery disc out of 1dvd and 2dvds?

It will not make the recovery partition–only restore factory image to the C drive. There should be no difference between one or two disks, as it will span them. But usually one DVD is enough–depending on the fluff they try to install.

Dave, I made recovery discs from the wizard on my computer, however 1 of the discs has a scratch in it and I didn’t realize it until I started the restore. So I tried to reboot my system normally and it says “operating system not found.” so unfortunatly I need new discs. If I call that sony number to send me discs does it cost money or is it 100% free?

They’ll probably charge a small fee for shipping and the costs of the disks–but I do not think it will cost much. Call them and find out.

Also, due to the popularity of this topic, I will have to close it and ask that all future questions be asked on our free computer repair forums at http://www.pctechbytes.net/forums/

Visit the Sony site and look for their customer service number. Regarding the password, did you try Administrator with no password or maybe Admin with no password?

I need to close this topic. Please join our forums and we’ll continue there, everyone.
