When you first grasp the Motorola Droid Phone, you will instantly notice its one solid hefty unit. That should come as no surprise as the features on this unit are just amazing. This is one powerful web and communications tool. For Motorola this just may live up to all the hype that is surrounding its release.

This unit has a huge 3.7 inch Touch Screen LCD with 480×854 pixels, that is a staggering 409,920 pixels, more than twice the number of an Iphone 3GS. There is also a 40-key sliding fold out keyboard that is not quite the full width of the phone. Instead Motorola has decided to include a four way directional pad with a select button in the middle. This may be the only design flaw, which will have some people complaining that the keyboard should be larger.

droidSome other quirks worthy of mention include the lack of a talk or end button. These functions must be accessed via the call application. Interesting since almost every other phone on the market includes these buttons.  Some users are bound to be a little confused until they get used to the phone.

The Droid includes an accelerometer which reorients the unit quickly when you hold it sideways.  The Droid supports both the 1900MHz and 800 MHz CDMA EvDO bands on the Verizon Network. It ships with a 1,400 mAh battery rated for 270 hours of standby time and 385 minutes of talk time. Also included is a 16GB memory module, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 wireless connectivity. This phone also sports a 5.0 Megapixel camera with a dual LED flash and a DVD quality recording and playback at 720×480. A GPS receiver is also included to round out the already stellar hardware features.

The phone’s call quality is excellent even in noisy environments. Callers have no trouble hearing the other parties.

One thing that stands out is how fast the phone’s browser works. It is especially fast at displaying images, thanks in part to the 550MHz processor and its hardware-accelerated graphics. You are still at the mercy of the 3G network and its inherent bottlenecks. However once you get going web browsing is quick and smooth.

Video from YouTube looks great, with the playback of High-definition content displaying quite impressively. No stalling or audio dropouts. If you use a pair of high-quality headphones audio playback will be quite impressive as well.

As with previous Android versions, the universal search is still right there on the home page. Entering a search phrase will search the phone’s contact list, browser history and any other content that may have been loaded into the phone. It will also search the Internet. As with all Android devices a free Google account will be necessary to implement the phone’s standout features. The contact list and calendar will synchronize with you web-based account’s content.

Google Maps is voice enabled and you can just say the name of your destination to get directions, turn by turn.

This unit is sure to please many users in the highly competitive mobile market.
