Thats a great suggestion. I haven't read the link but I'm not sure it would work with DirecTV because they require activation of the DVR as well as a surcharge for programming. The programming is needed in order to make it possible to look ahead to see upcoming shows and schedule their recording in advance as well as searching for shows you would like to record. Of course they also make it work in a way to create extra revenue. In my experience they provide the DVR free, it's just the programming you have to pay extra for.

Thanks for the information though. The more we can learn from one another the better it is for those who don't know much about digital recorders.

David has a e-book on how to build a DIY DVR using old computers at: http://www.bocsco.com/pc_dvr.php. Just another option to own a DVR (low cost option, but need to spend some time to set it up).
