Day 10
Backup Your Data
Backing up our data is something we all want to do, but we seldom think about it until it's too late. To avoid losing precious documents and data, we're reminding you on day ten of this checklist to take a few minutes and backup your drive. Below are some tips on how to do this.
1. Use the backup utility in Windows. Go to Start, then programs, then Accessories and System Tools. You will see a link in the menu for Backup. Follow the wizard to backup the folders and data you want. This will create a file that you can put on a different hard drive, CD or flash device.
2. Backup to an online storage service. There are a lot of services on the Internet that provide backup services. If you have a business or if your data is absolutely critical, you may want to invest in one of these options. Often this data is stored offsite at a secure location. Having important data in tow places at the same time is a good idea.
3. GMail and Yahoo Mail. It's also possible to upload important documents to free mail servers such as GMail and Yahoo Mail. Two Gigs is a lot of space just sitting there ready to be used. Email an important document or picture to yourself as an attachment and you have just backed it up.
4. One-Touch External Hard Drive. These are great options because of the amount of space. New HDDs can exceed 300 Gigabytes and you can take them home or use them at the office.
5. USB Flash Drives. These are a fast and portable backup option. These devices are cheap and hold a lot of data.
No matter what option you choose, backup your data and sleep good knowing your data will be there, or somewhere, no matter what happens to your computer.
