Broadband Comparison

High Speed Internet is finally being offered at affordable prices to most of the country in one format or another. Whether it's DSL through your phone company or cable broadband through your local cable provider, most people are able to surf the Internet faster than they were able to the year before. Usually, you will not have a choice of two providers, but we'll talk about the differences between high speed Internet so you can make an educated decision on which is best for you.

Service
Description
Cable Broadband
$45 per mo. / 6 Mbits per sec.
Cable companies are providing low-cost broadband through their existing cable lines to subscribers. Considered a good option because it often provides higher speeds than other forms of broadband.
DSL Broadband
$20-40 / 1.5 Mbits per sec.
DSL is provided through your telephone company and is a great option if you live near the service provider. While typically not as fast as cable broadband, it is usually cheaper and companies will often guarantee upload and download speeds.
Satellite
$60-100 / 400 Kb per second
Satellite broadband Internet access has no benefits over the other options, but it is better than dial up access and can be received when DSL and Cable is not available.

The next decade will see the emergence of fiber optic broadband which promises even greater download and upload speeds than cable. Fiber Optics will be supplied by your local telephone company and will finally tie in all services (telephone, Internet access and high speed broadband Internet) under one company.

For now, cable modem seems to be the best deal for price / speed comparison.
