Internet Connection Sharing
ICS
is a fast and easy way to implement a small network and share a single
connection. We will explain the easiest way to network two PCs and
describe the networking hardware involved in this type of setup.
Normally, you'll have an Internet connection, then a router, and
finally multiple computers connecting to the router via Ethernet or
wireless. In this setup, you will have an Internet connect, a PC with a
network card, and a PC that has two network cards. You will use a
cross-over cable to connect the two computers. While this cable
resembles a standard patch cable, the wiring inside is different.

Connecting The Network
The
modem will go first, followed by the Host PC, then the second PC will
plug into the open network adapter of the first machine, which has two
network cards. The network card that is attached to the modem will be
configurerd to Obtain IP Address Automatically. The second card will
use the cross-over cable and connect to the second PC's network card.
Running
the Internet Connection Sharing Wizard will shave you time once the
hardware is connected. You can run the Wizard in XP by going to
Start>Control Panel>Network Connections, then Setup a Home or
Small Office Network. Run the wizard on the host PC and indicate that
this computer is connected to the Internet. You will need to know which
network card is connected to the Internet and which is connected to the
other PC. You need to know this because the wizard will designate a
local IP address to the network adapter that connects to the local
network. Once completed the wizard will want to make a disk with the
ICS information on it. You will then run this network disk on the
client PC, which will change its IP address and workgroup ID to match
that of the host computer.
