Online Backup Software
Backing up your data is crucial and having a multi-faceted strategy is key to making sure you never lose valuable information stored on your PC. It’s common these days to backup to an external hard drive or to DVD, but considering an offsite backup option is also a wise decision. |
|
Unless you’re taking your backup data with you, or moving it to a place away from the home, your data is not really backed up. A single backup of your PC is risky. Having your data in three places at once may sound like overkill, but when your data is concerned, it’s essential.
There are numerous companies that do a good job backing up your data online and they all work pretty much the same: They will sit in memory and monitor your folders for changed files and when the files have changed, they will backup these files for you. Carbonite is a program that does this very well. At only a few dollars a month, you can be sure your data is safe.
While you can research which company offers the best price and features for you backup needs, the mere concept of using an online backup strategy is important. If you are the type of person that does routine backups and are able to move your data offsite, then you may not need this. But if you are relying on backing up to one device and leaving that backup copy in the same room with the original, then your data is not safe. Also, the key to a successful backup plan is that it be automatic. If you are relying on memory to backup your PC, then you’ll find it isn’t getting done as often as it should.
Alternate Data Backup Options
If your data is not private—like bank records and credit card numbers—you can rely on free services like Gmail for data, documents and images, and Flickr for images. Online Email is a great place to temporarily store information and Flickr can be used to share photos with family and friends while at the same time being a backup solution.
