Question Title IDE Docking Station

IDE Docking Station

IDE Docking Stations are becoming a viable solution for moving massive amounts of data from computer to computer and location to location. With terabyte hard drives becoming the norm in the tech industry, it simply no longer makes sense to rely on thumdrives, CDs / DVDs and certainly not floppies. This article will explain what IDE docking stations are and the different types that are available to consumers.

What is an IDE Docking Station

Docking stations have been around for a very long time. You can get docking stations for laptops, your MP3 player and just about anything with a connector that needs to go into another connector. In regards to IDE docking Stations, these provide a way to dock an IDE device (in this case a hard drive) into a cradle, which then interfaces with a USB port in your computer. How does this help you? Well, the IDE drive essentially becomes hot-swappable, allowing you to temporarily plug in a hard drive and see it in your computer without actually having to open the case.

Types of IDE Docking Stations

There are so many different types of docking stations for hard drives, we'll only list the concepts here. There are docking stations that fit an IDE drive, Sata drives, and universal ones that fit both and can interface with both Firewire and USB.

Reasons For Using IDE Docking Stations

There are several reasons for using IDE hard drive docking stations:
1. Convenience - It is extremely convenient being able to move massive abounts of data from one drive to another without having to open your PC or laptop to add a second drive or to upgrade your smaller drive.
2. Offsite Backup -docking stations are a perfect medium for offsite backups. Bring your drive home, drop it in the dock, and copy your files. When done, take the drive back to its offsite location for storage.
3. Flexibility - Having an IDE docking station can help you interface with other devices that do not have an IDE port.

Whatever your reasons for using an IDE hard drive docking station, comsumers will begin to embrace these devices and we will begin to see them more on a consumer level rather than in just computer repair shops.
