Gmail
POP3 and SMTP
During
our quest to reduce the hundreds of SPAM messages filling our Inbox
each day, we decided to look into how Gmail could help us with this
problem. As it turns out, you can use Gmail as your POP3 and SMTP
server. You no longer have to rely on the reduced functionality of
Outlook Express to manage your Email. Gmail is easier to search,
organize and you have access to it from anywhere in the world.
No
More SPAM
Gmail
does a great job with recognizing and moving SPAM messages to another
folder automatically. You can always browse the SPAM folder for
errant Emails, but we have noticed that Gmail does a near perfect job
of distinguishing between good Email and SPAM. You would expect it
to, as Google is a top search engine that has to deal with SPAMMERS
on a immense scale.
Activating
POP3 and SMTP
Configuring
Gmail to act as your POP3 and SMTP server is very easy. Login to
your Gmail account and look to the top-right of the page. Click
Settings, then the
Accounts tab. Next, click
Add Email. You will
then see a dialog box that asks for your name and Email address.
After clicking Next, you will be asked to verify that you are the
owner of that address. To do so, Gmail will send you a confirmation
Email that you must respond to in order to have that account added to
the Gmail Interface.
Next,
you'll also want to go back to the settings screen and make sure you
select
When I receive a message sent to one of my addresses:
“Reply from the same address the message was sent to.” Otherwise,
when you reply to an email that was sent to a different account it
will reply with the Gmail account.
