Question Title Configure WPA Wireless Connection

Configure WPA Wireless Connection

With recent exploits to the defunct WEP standard, wireless users need to strongly consider updating their WiFi network to use the WPA encryption protocol. In order to successfully implement this, you’ll need to make sure all of your older wireless devices support WPA. Otherwise, you’ll find these devices unable to connect to the network. These devices can include laptops, computers, Tivos, your game system, etc.

Next, you’ll want to login to your router. Depending on your router make and model, you’ll need to look for a wireless tab or link. In that area, you’ll see that you’re either not setup for a secure connection or you are currently using WEP. Change it to WPA and type in a long pass phrase you can remember--the longer the better, using numbers and letters.

Your router will want to reboot itself, which is where the fun begins. All wireless network devices will suddenly stop working. That’s fine, we expect that because the security has changed on the router.

Right-click the wireless connection down by your clock and select Connect to a Network. Your router should appear (and sometimes other routers in the neighborhood will also appear). Click the router and select WPA from the options. You will see a dialog box that prompts you for your pass phrase. Enter the pass phrase you setup on the router-side and your wireless card should connect to the network without any problems. Proceed to do this will the remaining wireless devices on your network.
