Day 4
Disk Defragment Your Hard Drive
Defragging your hard disk drive is essential in the long term health of your PC. On Day 3 we did a thorough scan of the HDD, so now we're going to organize that data in a way that is more efficient for the hard disk and Operating System.
You'll see a slight increase in system performance once the defrag is complete because the hard drive will need to travel less to access data located on the drive because Windows has arranged the data so that it is no longer scattered around.
It's a good idea to defragment the hard drive in Safe Mode because in Safe Mode the system is in a state where very few background programs are running that can interfere with the process. If you want to try to defrag in Safe Mode, tap the F8 key when booting and select Safe Mode from the boot options.
You can then navigate to the disk defragmenter utility by going to Start, then Programs, then Accessories and finally to System Tools. It's a good idea to perform this type of PC maintenance at least every two months.
Hint: Do this before bed as defragging the hard drive may take a few hours.
