Computer Firewall Software

The following software firewalls were selected because of their performance and reputation. Having a software firewall is important. While Windows XP SP2 turns theirs on by default, it blocks only inbound traffic. Depending on your setup and your concerns about viruses, hackers and trojans, a good software firewall that blocks incoming and outgoing traffic may be what you're looking for.

Some consider having a PC behind a network router enough. The router acts as a buffer between your network and the outside world, making it difficult for random scans to find your internal PC. Invisibility doesn't always mean safety, though.

Kerio Firewall - Most trial software works for a month and then stops, but not the Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall. After 30 days, it shuts down advanced privacy protection features, but will continue to run with reduced functionality for free.
