Question Title Stop Email SPAM

Stop Email Spam - Be Proactive

Protecting yourself against SPAM and Phishing scams needs to be a priority, as these types of nuisances make it difficult to have a normal Email experience and also pose a serious security risk. Your Email address belongs to you. Protect it.

1. Choose an Email client, like Thunderbird that has SPAM and Phishing filters that learn as you flag Emails in your Inbox. Thunderbird also automatically updates itself, so you know you always have the latest, most secure version. We recommend the program Spamihlator, available from our downloads site at http://www.haftahave.com.

2. Get a throw away account. It's not a bad idea to have a throw away account. With Mail services like GMail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail, there is no reason to ever give your real address out to an online business you do not trust. There is also a free service at dodgeit.com that allows you to give out any email address you want @dodgeit.com.

3. Whitelists and Blacklists - You can seek out companies to employ a method called whitelist, which means you will only receive email from sources you want, while others with be blacklisted. These are often commercial companies, but we expect this new approach to SPAM will be common in the near future.

Run an antivirus that scans Emails

Most antiviruses will scan incoming Emails. Viruses can propagate through Email attachments as well as the HTML documents that open on the preview pane of your email client. Not opening email attachments, deactivating the preview pane and running an Email virus scanner will help reduce the threat of viruses and worms.

Alternate Email Clients

Some typical email clients include Outlook, Outlook Express, thunderbird, and Eudora. Web-based clients such as GMail, Yahoo Mail, and Hotmail are good alternatives to local email clients.
