Computer Tech Glossary

Octet - An octet is data that consists of exactly 8 bits. A byte is an octet of data.

Office - A group of programs released in a bundle from Microsoft that included Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint and others.

OEM - OEM is an acronym of Original Equipment Manufacturer and is the term used for parts purchased by one manufacturer and used by another to build a PC. These parts are often seen in plain white packaging without manuals or extras and are generally not for consumers.

Onion Routing - Onion routing is used to obscure the point of origin of data by going through numerous routers that open anonymous connections to the next until it reaches its destination, making it difficult to trace.

Open Source - Open source is making code available for developers to modify or examine for flaws. The Linux Operating System is an example of open source code.
