Computer Tech Glossary

WAN - A Wide Area Network is a network that spans a large geographical distance. An example of a WAN would be your Internet Provider. They are extending their network to you over a great distance.

Warez - Warez are illegal copies of software that can be downloaded from illegal sites or Peer-to-Peer networks.

Warm - boot - A Warm-boot is the restarting of a PC without first shutting down the power. Can also be considered a soft-boot.

.Wav - A .wav file is a file stored in the .Wav audio format. These are the types of files you will find on music CDs that play in your car or home stero. They can be compressed into .MP3 files.

Web - Also known as the World Wide Web or the Internet.

WEP - WEP stands for Wired Equivelent Privacy and is considered obsolete security for your wireless network. It has been replaced by WPA.

Whistler - Whistler was the codename for Windows XP, much like Longhorn was the codename for Windows Vista.

WiFi - Wireless networking, also known by the standard set by IEEE 802.11.

Windows - An Operating System deleloped by Microsoft Corporation in 1983. Windows has had several incarnations since, with the latest being XP and Vista.

Windows Media Player - WMP is a media player bundled in with the Windows Operating System.

Wireless - Networking done without wires. Ethernet is wired, WiFi (or 802.11) is wireless.

Worm - A virus that propagates via Email.

WPA - A more secure wireless encryption standard that stands for Wifi Protected Access.
