How to Enable IE7 Protected Mode

Protected Mode in IE7 helps prevent websites from launching dangerous code that could infect your computer.

How to Enable IE7 Protected Mode

Internet Explorer Protected Mode is a new feature that was implemented in the Windows Vista version of Internet Explorer 7. Protected Mode is an added security level that reduces the possibility your system will become infected with spyware or viruses. If a website attempt to execute code that would typically infect a user with spyware, Protected Mode prompts the user to allow or disallow the action.

You can enable Protected Mode in Windows Vista by opening IE 7 and going to Tools>Internet Options>Security and checking the box that says Enable Protected Mode. This feature should be checked by default, but make sure it is running, as it can help shield you from dangerous websites.

While IE7 Protected Mode helps reduce the chance you'll get infected, it cannot be assumed that your system is invulnerable to malware. There is a certain degree of user-action that can cause infection. Such as, if you believe and bad site is legit and allow it to run when Protected Mode prompts you for action. And there are many security vulnerabilities in IE that advanced hackers can take advantage of when you visit their website.

So while IE7 Protected Mode is not the complete answer to Internet browsing safety, it is a valuable extra security feature that should be implemented on Internet Explorer 7 browsers running within Windows Vista.
