Windows XP Professional allows users to request help for technicians or other computer users from a remote location. This is great for families or those just seeking help with their computer problems.

Remote Assistance in Windows XP

Windows XP introduced the ability for users to configure Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to allow easy access to the host computer using Remote Assistance. The problem with Remote Desktop is knowing what to enter in the fields in order to connect. Remote Assistance make it easy by sending an invitation to the person who will be providing help. It's that invitation that establishes the connection, so users do not need to worry about figuring out IP addresses, usernames and other details that could trip up the connecting person.

How to configure Remote Assistance

The very first step is to enable Remote Assistance. To do this, right-click My Computer, click Properties, then select the Remote tab. Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop should be checked.

Next, go to Start and click Help and Support. To the right, you will see Ask For Assistance. Below that, click the link that says "Invite a friend to connect to your computer with Remote Assistance." You will then see another link that says"Invite someone to help you." Once you click that, you will have a couple of ways to send the invitation. The first is through Windows Messenger. The second is through email. Email will by the typical choice for most people. After adding a subject and message for the person connecting, you will need to specify a duration for the connection and a password for the user. The final step is to click the Send Invitation button.

Using Remote Assistance

Once the connection is established, your friend will be able to see your desktop and, with permission, have access to your mouse. As the host, you have the ability to end the session at any time by clicking the Stop button or by pressing ESC on your keyboard.

You will also notice there is a chat Window where the host and the person connecting can type and communicate.

Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop is a great solution for people who need help with their computers. It is often used to fix minor software configuration problems without the need to lug the computer into the shop or to a friend's house.
