Learn how to renew your router's IP address in a few simple steps.

Renew Your IP Address

As with your computer, your router may need to reboot occasionally to renew its IP address, particularly if you notice a performance hit when uploading and downloading. Your router receives an external IP address from your Internet provider, and this IP address is leased. When the lease expires, you're usually given the same one, but from time to time, you may get an IP that doesn't perform well for you. This is when it's time to reboot everything.

Start by releasing the IP address on your PC.

If you're running XP or 2000, go to START, then RUN and type cmd and hit enter. Then type ipconfig /release . This releases the private internal IP address the router has supplied the PC. Next, power down the PC.

It's now safe to unplug the AC power on both the router and the modem. Wait a few minutes and then power up the modem first. Once you have the normal green flashing lights, plug in the router and let it cycle through. After a few more minutes, go ahead and boot the PC. The router should now have a new (or re-leased) external IP, while the PC has a new internal IP address.

If you do not see an immediate boot in upload and download speeds, you may have other problems with your network or PC that requires attention.
