access your PC from anywhere in the world. this guide will walk you
through the process of setting Remote Desktop up in XP Professional.
Remote
Desktop can be used to allow remote support for your PC, or you can
work from home. Remote desktop can be run in other versions of Windows.
Visit Microsoft's Website to learn how.
Getting Started With Remote Desktop
First, go to START, then Control Panel, then System. In the diagram
to the right, you will see the tab for Remote. From here you will want
to tick the box under remote Desktop that says Allow Users to Connect
Remotely to this computer.
Quick Note: If using Windows,
Firewall, you'll want to make sure it is setup to allow exceptions. In
the Control Panel, click Firewall (Service Pack 2). Next, click the
Exceptions tab and make sure Remote Desktop is ticked.
You'll
also need to know the name of the computer. Get this by going to
Control Panel, System, then in the same diagram to the right you will
see Computer Name. This is the computer name of the PC you are on.
There
may be additional configurations needed. For instance, if you're behind
a router, you will need to login to the router and make sure port 3389
is open for the computer that will be using it. To determine your
internal IP address, go to START>RUN and then type
cmd. Next, you'll type
ipconfig /all
and your IP address should be listed. This is the internal IP address
for that PC. To get the router's external IP address, go to a site like
www.whatismyIP.com. You may need this external IP when connecting to a computer from a remote location.
