Some viruses simply will not die. They have become so sophisticated that removing or shutting them down often takes several different programs and a lot of patience. The key to destroying an virus is to get it before it loads into memory. Even then, you boot to Windows only to find that it was never removed. So what do you do? You must research the specific virus from reputable sites and then come up with a strategy for removing it. but beware, some sites have been setup to trick you into downloading even more viruses or to get you to buy a product that won't work to resolve your situation.

Make Sure Viruses Aren't in Memory Before Scan

Some spyware will install one or two different processes that run in the background. Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the task manager and end those processes. There are often a lot of material online about some of the major ones, like Antivirus 2008 and Virus Trigger. You will notice in the case of the latter that you cannot stop processes like hpmon.exe because they will replace themselves instantly. It is essential for these process to be stopped before the program can be removed. In the case of the webmediaviewer that installs when you try to initiate a video that says requires an ActiveX Object. The program resides in C:\Program Files\WebMediaViewer and in that folder you will see the files that load. Boot to Safe Mode and remove that folder.

You should also run antivirus programs that are kept up to date. We have several free virus programs in our downloads section.
