Recommended Website Setup

Everyone should have a website. Whether it be a standard blog or a business, everyone needs to be on the web. While some consider Facebook a website, we believe a stand-alone website is always the best way to go. You have complete control over the look, feel and features–unlike platforms like Facebook. We frequently get asked what our recommendations are for a new website. Having suffered through years of trial and error, we have the answer for you.

The first couple steps are easy: Secure a domain name and hosting. We like either BlueHost or Hostgator for hosting. The domain can be purchased through them or through a domain reseller like Enom. You can buy the domain name with the hosting, but we highly recommend keeping them separate, as it can be a hassle if you ever want to change hosting. Once you have secured a domain name and hosting, the next step is to install a content management system and begin your life on the web.

WordPress And The Thesis Theme

WordPress is a great Content Management System (CMS). Best known as a blogging platform, WordPress is versatile enough to be used as a static site, a blog, or both. We recommend WordPress to our users because it is free and highly supported. It is frequently updated, so you always know your website is going to be current with web standards. The only problem with WordPress is its template. It comes with a generic template, but customization can sometimes be a chore.

WordPress can be automatically installed through the admin panel provided with BlueHost or Hostgator.

This is where our preferred template, Thesis, comes in. Thesis is by far the best template we have come across in several years. We say this because Thesis has built-in features that make it easy to customize. Want to insert your logo? No problem. Want to add or remove a sidebar column? No problem. Want built-in SEO features that allow you to add a custom page title, description and keywords? Again, no problem. Thesis is developed by DIYThemes and they have a thriving support forums, filled with users and developers just waiting to help you with any question you have. The Thesis Theme for WordPress can be found here.

You Must Have A Newsletter

Why do you need a newsletter? It’s simple, really. A newsletter helps you grow a subscriber list, so no matter how much the search engines snub you in the years to come, you will always have a growing list of loyal subscribers that love your content and want to read about any updates or announcements you have. Subscribers are not random traffic, which means it’s quite possible to have consistent, sustainable traffic for your website. We highly recommend Aweber as a newsletter client.
