Day 5
Run Microsoft Update to Patch Exploits
Microsoft releases update every couple of weeks, and while some are minor, others are patches to major vulnerabilities and exploits. Incredibly, we find machines in homes and offices that have not been patched in years. These types of machines can be used by hackers to launch Denial of Service attacks of be used as zombie machines to send millions of SPAM Emails.
If your machine is not running the latest updates and service packs, it's quite likely your system has been compromised.
So on day five we are hoping everyone will visit Microsoft update and plug these security holes.
You can use this direct link to Microsoft Update, or you can often find it on your Start menu. If you're running Windows XP SP2 you can go into the Control Panel and look
for the Security icon and turn on Automatic Updates. When a new update is available an icon will be displayed by your system clock notifying you an update is ready to be installed.
