If you have a Kindle you already know how easy it is to buy and download eBooks through Amazon. But did you know you can checkout eBooks on your Kindle through your local public library? The best part is, you can do it all online! This technique will turn your Amazon Kindle into a portable free public library reader. The downloads work the same as a regular library book. You search for a title, check it out from the library for a specified period of time, and then it expires. You can download it again if you haven’t finished reading it.

Finding Amazon Kindle eBooks At Your Public Library

At this time, public library books for Kindle are only available at U.S. libraries. You will need an updated library card from your local library that has a pin number assigned to it. Visit your library if you haven’t been there for a few years and ask the librarian to update your account.

To begin, you’ll need to do a library search on

Click Library Search and then type in the name, city or postal code of your library and then click Search. The results will show all of the libraries in your area. Select one from your county.

Search for a title or author and then tick the eBooks radio button from the drop-down menu. Click the little magnifying glass to begin your search. You will see a list of books and the option to “Place a Hold” if the title is currently out or “Add to Cart” if the title is available.

Specify the amount of time you want to keep the book, and then click the Confirm Checkout button.

You should now see the cover of the book. Click the button that says Get for Kindle. You will be taken to Amazon where you will need to click a button to download the title.

It’s easier if you download the Kindle eBook from your library to your Desktop. To begin reading the book on your Amazon Kindle, make sure your Kindle is connected to your computer via USB. Then, copy the downloaded file to the “documents” folder of your Kindle. You will find the Kindle in your My Computer section as an external drive. Once you copy the file to your “documents” section on your Kindle, it will then appear on your Home screen and you can begin reading.

  1. Newcastle Library a little while back allowed you to download books to your laptop or computer at home. I use the kinddle software on my smart phone to read the books from the library it works pretty well but i still prefer written books.
